FAQs

This page will, over time, list the most common IT oriented questions and their respective answers.

FAQ or FAQs stands for "Frequently Asked Question(s)". They are a list of questions and answers given in brief points on a particular set of topics.

Common questions

Q. What is the "it-support at educ" email address?
A. This email address is a direct link into the IT Support helpdesk system. Any email sent to this email address automatically generates a new Support Ticket within the helpdesk. This "Ticket" is then viewable on our helpdesk dashboard, for all in IT to read, and for a specific member of the team to "take" as their job and respond to.

Q. Can you help me set up the projector / whiteboard in a room?
A. Your first port of call for such help should be the AV Support Service. If you cannot reach them, we can try to assist you.

Q.Can you give me printer toner?
A.Printer consumables are available from the AV Support Service.

MCS (formerly PWF)

Q. Can I plug my USB device into a MCS machine?
A. The MCS system only allows you to plug in a USB memory key. No other devices are known to work (eg webcams).

Q. What software is available on the MCS machines?
A. Please see the Software section on our MCS page

Q. I have downloaded a Zip file, but when I double click top open it, it prompts me to add files. Why?
A. It has been noticed that sometimes a Zip file might not behave as your'd expect. Instead of double-clicking the file, try right clicking, and in the "context menu" that appears, look for an option to "extract files to...". One such option should let you extract the files to a new directory whose name is the same as the file you downloaded, but without the ".zip" at the end.

Q. I have downloaded a file, but Windows or a program won't let me open it. Why?
A. There could be many reasons, but one is that Windows doesn't always like to work with directories that have non-Latin characters in their names (eg "Τα έγγραφά μου" instead of "My Documents"). Try saving the file to another directory (eg make a directory called "temp") and see if Windows will work with the file then.
